May 29th, 2008 Ten of our cadets started their summer break off with another fun outing at Bardstown airport. All had a chance to take O'-rides in the Kentucky Wing glider. While one cadet was flying, the waiting cadets enjoyed wiffle ball, football and pizza. Wing Chief of Staff Lt. Colonel Paul Osborne served as our tow pilot for the day. Many thanks to Colonel Osborne and all who helped out during the event.
Derby Weekend was a busy one for KY 39ers. Thursday and Friday night our cadets ,seniors, friends and family cleaned up after the races at Churchill Downs. ......Saturday morning the Squadron was activated for an ELT mission. Col. McGreal led the squadron ground team on the second actual ELT search in a three week period . This took place at SDF during the height of the Derby traffic flow. After a few hours, the team using it’s expert skills, identified the transmitting aircraft among the hundreds of corporate jets at SDF. The pilot was notified and then allowed our unit to deactivate the offending ELT. ...While an erroneous ELT signal poses no immediate threat to anybody’s safety it is a safety hazard. If a real distressed aircraft where to go down in the vicinity, it’s distress signal would be confused with the erroneous signal of the ramped aircraft.... Sunday morning was our final cleanup at Churchill Downs.. Oh boy, P.T. comes Monday.... Hat’s off to our many volunteers who contributed to the Louisville community on this 2008 Derby weekend!
April 13th - Just as families were settling down for the evening, the squadron was alerted for a dispatch to SDF airport for an ELT signal. The group left Bowman 16 strong and with an airport police escort they proceeded to search the east side of the airport. With the reflection from the ELT signal off the hangers it was a challenge to zero in on the correct aircraft. After extensive searching on foot, the ELT was traced to an F-16 that had flown in for Thunder over Louisville. After a long night the cadets had a feeling of satisfaction. Most cadets and seniors arrived home well after 1AM. While America sleeps, KY 39 remais Vigilant!
March 15th, 2008 . The Squadron had another succesfull Dining out at the University Club. Lots of trips to the grog, awards and presentations accompanied a great meal. Lt. Steve Bishop from Wing HQ presented the Squadron with the "Kentucky Squadron of the Year Award." Good Job LCS and keep up the good work!
Nov 10th- The Squadron participated in a Sarex training exercise hosted by the Ft. Knox CAP Squadron. We participated in the newest simulation training adapted for ground search teams. Many also attended a map reading class and participated in an Urban Direction Finding mission on the grounds of Ft. Knox. The pinging effect of the ELT in this highly congested enviorment proved very frustrating and challenging. However, thanks to the persistance of our KY 39 cadets, the target was found!
The fall SAREX was held October 19th, 20th and 21st at Jefferson Memorial Forest. The perfect fall weather complimented the host of exciting activities to make the weekend a total success. Our squadron was joined by Golden Armor Squadron from Ft. Knox and one Indiana wing cadet. The main event was the missing person search conducted with 2 ELT teams and two K9 search teams. In addition to this the cadets participated in classes ranging from emergency water location to a host of team building exercises. Many cadets even put on a skit for all to enjoy on Saturday evening. As usual Lt. Reynolds and his staff provided the group with meals fit for a General. We look forward to more bivouacs like this in the future.
September 23rd -Plane wash day.. proved to be a fun and educational Sunday afternoon that also raised a few dollars for the Squadron. In addition to washing the Louisville based CAP planes, our cadets got up close and personal with several type aircraft from a refurbished war plane to an experimental RV-6. There were plenty of Cessnas and Piper Cherokees in between. A special hats off to our belly washers. They were the main attraction for the aircraft owners seeking a wash. Thanks to all.
August 12th turned out to be a great day for KY 39 members at the Bardstown Airport. All cadets recieved Glider or Power orientation flights. Captain Crace and Lt. Colonel McGreal provided ES training throughout the day even as the temperature soared into the 90's. Of course all were fed barbecue thanks to Master Chef Lt. Reynolds.
